This was an experimental return. It feels like ages since I sailed. And
with a frozen top half of the lake was quite a venture. From the shore you
could sail to the RH bank turn and come back. Go upwind and you head
towards the ice, and go down to Wally's corner and likewise but pack-ice
down there. So I stuck inbetween the ice flows hoping that there wouldn't
be any major current changes! In the middle there was a sinew of an ice
river flowing from the south and as you sailed through it a chhhhh, crunchy
noise came from the board. A bit concerned - I checked, no scratches, so
must be OK.
Mike, Jo & John were taking a few photos of "windsurfer and ice" for the
annals. I fell in, yes it was cold.
Then I got through the finger hots and I was starting to get into a rhythm
and not fall in at all. But it was cold and nasty, so enough of that, and
in for a hot cuppa.
I've got a bit of a cold so I'll see how I go with bike training this
week.
After everyone had gone and I was finishing packing, a combination of wind
and warmth and the Ross Ice Shelf began to move once more. It came all the
way down the lake in about 10 mins. The shore was now all pack ice and it
was impossible to sail...!
